Kosken neito
I went on a day trip to Vekarus nature trail with my friends a while back. The walk went alongside a river with lots of beautiful rapids. Being there reminded me of a spirit from Finnish folklore that could wield the power of the rapids. Kosken neito was the maiden of the rapids.
People would pray for her help to calm down the waters for a safer passage.
But acting disrespectfully around these rapids would be fatal…
The Great Journey
The Great Journey is a story about how in the most desperate situations you can always find your way.
A great vast desert stands between two lush paradise. They used to be connected before the notorious drought and sandstorm that started building a desert between them.
Families were separated as crossing the desert was extremely dangerous, taking several days if not weeks in the dry hot sandy terrain.
One day a worried elephant separated from some of her family was taking a bath in her favorite pond. She had been troubled by fear of what had happened to her loved ones in her absence and had been trying to come up with solutions on crossing over the desert. And then, while looking at the lotus plants growing all around her she found the answer...
She asked for the beautiful lotus plants to live in symbiosis with her. The lotus plants were thrilled since they had never traveled beyond the pond. The elephant would fill their leaves with water using her trunk for crossing over to the other side.
When she arrived to the other side of the desert all her worries lifted. Her family had been looked after by the local people and animals.
It seemed that many had friends and family on the other side but had not come up with a solution for the dangerous journey.
In awe of her creativity they asked if they could join her on her journey back. Filled with gratitude for the kindness shown to her family she agreed.
Ever since the water elephant has been guiding people and animals through the desert twice a year. Providing water and shade on the way for her fellow travelers.

Meet the Artist
Hi!
I’m Annika and I’m an artist from Finland.
For most of my adult life I have worked in building restoration fixing old windows for historically important buildings. I started dedicating more time for my art in my late twenties, since I felt that it was what I really wanted out of my life.
I have had curiosity and passion to learn all kinds of creative skills from early childhood and I have kept that passion with me through out my life.
I mainly work with watercolors and oils but have dabbled with metal art in the past.
